Mel Tucker didn’t mince words Monday, after his Michigan State defense gave up 397 yards and four touchdowns through the air.
The Spartans fell to Washington 39-28 and watched as Michael Penix Jr. threw for all but 3 of those yards through just three quarters. Michigan State trailed 22-0 lead in the second quarter and were never in contention.
“Like I told the players, the resume is on the tape,” Tucker said on Monday, per MLive.com. “Right now, I’m a horse(bleep) football coach right now. That, honestly, is how I think about it so we’ve got to get better.”
Tucker, who was an assistant under Nick Saban at Alabama in 2015, could only watch as Penix completed 24 of 40 passe and just missed posting the eighth 400-yard passing game in Washington history. He was at his best in the first half, connecting on 18 of 24 attempts for 278 yards and leading Washington to touchdowns on four of its five possessions.
He wasn’t sacked by a Michigan State pass rush that led the country in sacks after two weeks.
Asked if he takes a performance like Saturday personal, Tucker didn’t flinch in his response.
“Hell yeah I take it personal,” Tucker said. “I take it all personal.”
He also didn’t appear real pleased with how his guys have responded to the loss.
“Today there was a couple guys that were a little late to treatment, which pisses me off because that’s how you get your ass beat,” Tucker said, per MLive.com. “You look for things like that moving forward. You make good choices and decisions and we have intentional l focus and that’s how we get better and make sure we don’t go out there and play bad football like we did on Saturday.”
