A non-profit coffee house opening this month in Titusville is planning to give homeless people a chance at independence and employment.

Modern House Coffee Shop will open Sept. 23, at 422 Sixth Ave. S.

Owner Troy Whetstone and his wife Jeanisha spent almost two years refurbishing a former bail bonds business location. The coffee shop will serve various kinds of coffee, as well as breakfast foods, cake, cookies and other treats.

“It’s quite a story,” he said. “It goes all the way back to 2016, when I got a word from God about opening up a coffee shop.”

A native of Titusville, Troy’s grandfather Reuben once sold hot dogs. Over the past four years, Troy has sold coffee in pop-up locations in Ensley, Titusville and downtown. He purchased the location in Titusville just before the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Western Communities Redevelopment Alliance, which assists businesses in western Jefferson County, helped Whetstone as he turned the concept into a reality.

Whetstone envisions the coffee shop as a non-profit where homeless employees will go through financial literacy and nutrition classes, as well as life coaching, and eventually transitioning to Lawson State for job certification.
