Traffic deaths in New Jersey during the first six months of the year were almost one-fifth higher compared to a year earlier as more motorists took to the open road, according to government estimates.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimated that 342 people died on New Jersey highways from January to June, up from 285 during the same period in 2021. The 19.9% increase is higher than 41 other states.
