One swimmer apparently drowned and two others were rescued Sunday night from the waters in Long Branch, according to police.

The body of the unidentified swimmer was found shortly after 9 p.m. in the ocean near the 100 block of Ocean Avenue North, Long Branch Police Chief Domingos Saldida said in an email.

“Two additional swimmers were rescued by Long Branch personnel and taken to the hospital to be examined,” Saldida said. No other injuries were reported, he added.

Local police contacted authorities in Akron, Ohio, where the victim’s family resides. “No information on the victim will be released until notification has been confirmed,” Saldida said.

In addition to Long Branch police officers, members of the township’s fire department, beach rescue, New Jersey State Police and U.S. Coast Guard helped with the search and recovery, the chief said.
