With the eyes of the nation fixed upon him, Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg is fumbling big-time. How incompetent is he?
Bragg had to know that prepping a felony case against ex-President Donald Trump would bring a media circus. How did he not have his ducks in a row ahead of time?Β
After days of indicating an arraignment over hush-money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels could come as soon as Tuesday, and with the NYPD on alert to handle potential violence, Bragg has on Thursday canceled the grand-jury session for the second day in a row.
Sources indicate heβs trying to arrange a mystery witness to rebut Mondayβs testimony from pro-Trump lawyer Robert Costello, who may have swayed enough jurors to put the case at risk.
Yet DAs decide who talks to their grand jurors. Was the case so weak that Bragg felt he needed to risk having Costello testify? Β
The DA supposedly had his star witness, former Trump lawyer and proven liar Michael Cohen, ready to counter Costelloβs claims β but it seems Costello surprised him with testimony Cohen couldnβt address.
The mystery witness is supposed to fix that, but: Is Bragg finding it hard to get this person in to testify β or having trouble actually finding someone to say whatβs needed?
At best, the case already suffered from relying on 1) Cohen and 2) an untested and complex legal argument, namely that Trumpβs alleged misdemeanor offense of falsifying business records to conceal the payment to Daniels (via Cohen) becomes a felony as a federal campaign-finance violation.
The US Justice Department, the Federal Election Commission and Braggβs own predecessor, Cy Vance, all declined to pursue that campaign-finance case β in part because Trump need only say he paid the hush money to protect his marriage, not his campaign.

Did Costello manage to point some of that out? Knock some other hole in the prosecution narrative?
Or is Bragg only now catching on to how hopeless his case is?
Itβs bizarre: The DA quashed this case in January 2022, reportedly because he didnβt think it was strong enough, only to start reviving it last November.
Was it new evidence that brought the turnaround, or anger from anti-Trumpers (many of them potential campaign donors)?
The DA has tried to blame the circus atmosphere on Trump, but Braggβs the one who took the case to the grand jury, and it was inevitable that asking Trump to testify (traditionally a sign your grand jurors are ready to pull the trigger) would leak, thanks to the ex-prez or Braggβs own leaky office.Β
Braggβs been fumbling from his first day on the job, with his Day One memo ordering prosecutors to stand down on charging a host of crimes.
And heβs barely changed course on that, though Manhattan crime (except murders and shootings, which the NYPD has targeted) continues to soar, with booming shoplifting killing retail establishments.
But now the entire nation is learning what most New Yorkers already knew:Β Alvin Bragg just isnβt very good at his job.Β
