Kayla Mooney of Golden pleads guilty in fatal pit bull attack

A woman whose pit bulls attacked and killed an 89-year-old woman pleaded guilty earlier this month to unlawful ownership of a dangerous dog, but she will avoid jail time if she completes the conditions of her agreement with prosecutors.

Kayla Mooney must serve 100 hours of public service and enroll in a dog ownership class and avoid owning a dog for one year. After the first year, she may only have one dog, weighing less than 20 pounds, in the house for a two-year period, Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Brionna Boatright said.

Charges are pending against Victor Bentley, who also was charged in connection with the dog attack, Boatright said.

Mary Gehring, 89, and her 12-year-old grandson were attacked by the two dogs Sept. 14 in the 15000 block of West First Avenue in Golden. Gehring was taken to a hospital, where she later died, while her grandson was flown to Children’s Hospital Colorado.
